Colorbond roof vs Zincalume roof – Which Is Best?

  • February 27, 2025
  • Helpful Information

Colorbond steel and Zincalume steel are popular roofing materials used across Australia, allowing you to quickly add a roof to your home that will protect it for years to come. These materials can seem very similar, but there are several differences that you should be aware of before making your decision. Let’s take a look at their differences to see which is right for you.

What are the key differences between Colorbond roofing and Zincalume roofing?

  • While both are considered highly durable, Colorbond Steel takes this to another level and is specifically designed for harsh Australian conditions
  • Zincalume is not as energy efficient as Colorbond, as it can get quite warm
  • Colorbond steel has more choices when it comes to colour & aesthetics offering over 22 standard colours, whereas Zincalume only offers one
  • Zincalume is a more affordable option, making it a great choice for homeowners on a budget

Overview of Colorbond Roofing

Overview of Colorbond Roofing

Colorbond is coated steel created by BlueScope Steel. They use high-quality steel to create a durable and weather-resistant roof that helps to regulate the temperature in your home. The steel is designed to be easy to clean and maintain, lasting for seventy years with an extended warranty.

Colorbond roofing materials & composition

Colorbond steel is high-quality, pre-painted steel that can last up to seventy years. The paint is baked on at a high temperature to give the steel its weather resistance and durability.

Colorbond roofing colours & profiles

Colorbond roofing is available in a variety of classic and contemporary colours, which we have listed below.

Classic colours

  • Classic cream
  • Cottage green
  • Deep ocean
  • Manor red
  • Night sky
  • Pale eucalypt
  • Woodland grey
  • Paperbark

Contemporary colours

  • Surfmist
  • Evening haze
  • Shale grey
  • Dune
  • Windspray
  • Gully
  • Wallaby
  • Jasper
  • Basalt
  • Monument
  • Ironstone

Colorbond roofing durability & longevity

Colorbond roofing is very durable and is designed to last for around seventy years. Before Colorbond steel makes its way to your roof, it has undergone rigorous tests to ensure it can withstand Australian weather. It is tested against corrosion and outdoor exposure, complying with Australian standards AS1397 and AS/NZ 2728.

Colorbond is a popular choice in areas prone to bushfires as it can survive adjacent fires. You don’t need to worry about the roof either, as it comes with an extended warranty, protecting you from surprise costs.

Overview of Zincalume roof

Overview of Zincalume roof

Zincalume steel is made from zinc, aluminium, and silicon and has been a popular option for roofs across Australia since the 1970s. It is designed to last four times longer than galvanised steel and like Colorbond, is also manufactured by BlueScope Steel.

Zincalume undergoes extensive testing to ensure they are resistant to the elements and will last for years.

Zincalume roof materials & composition

Zincalume is a mixture of zinc, aluminium, and silicon, designed to be one of the toughest steel products on the market. The combination of these three materials makes it incredibly durable and suitable for almost any environment.

Zincalume roof colours & profiles

Unfortunately, Zincalume only comes in one colour. You can purchase it in its silver, shiny aluminium colour only. Unlike Colorbond, there are no options to customise the Zincalume roof, which can put some customers off. Over time, the shine on your Zincalume roof can fade, too, which can be noticeable and detract from the appearance of your house.

Learn more about Zincalume roof installation options.

Zincalume roof durability & longevity

Zincalume steel is super durable and will last for years. It can last for four times longer than galvanised steel, making it a fantastic choice if you don’t want to replace your roof again. It is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions without showing signs of damage and is offered as a more long-lasting alternative than galvanised steel.

Its strength makes it perfect for those worried about corrosion, and it is less likely to get scratched or damaged, so you don’t need to worry about cats climbing on your roof or debris from trees hitting it.

How do colorbond roofing costs compare to Zincalume roof costs?

Colorbond sheets cost between $18 and $389 per sheet, making replacing your entire roof very expensive. You can spend between $15,000 and $25,000 on your roof, with labour costs varying depending on where you live.

By contrast, Zincalume is cheaper and costs between $18 and $21 per sheet. You can save money when using Zincalume while also enjoying a durable roof that can withstand harsh weather conditions.

Learn more about our Zincalume roofing options in Brisbane.

How energy efficient are both options?

Colorbond is more energy efficient than Zincalume, as it allows your house to remain cool during the summer. When using Colorbond steel on your home, you might find that your energy bills are lower, with Zincalume causing you to spend more on air conditioning to keep your house cool.

Colorbond Roofing energy efficiency

Colorbond steel is very energy efficient, but how energy efficient your roof will be depends on the colour that you choose. Colorbonds’ five light colours are solar reflective, while the other colours (except Night Sky) use solar reflectance technology. With this technology, your roof acts as a thermal insulator, helping to keep the temperature comfortable in your home.

Some users find colorbond roofs can help to cool their homes too, especially if they are reflecting light and heat away. This reduces how often you need to use your air conditioner, saving you money on your energy bills.

Zincalume roof energy efficiency

Zincalume steel radiates heat, making it more likely to heat your home than keep it cool. The shiny colour can heat up quite quickly, causing your home to retain heat. While this can be helpful during the winter, in the summer months, it is not ideal. You might find that you need to run your air conditioning unit more, causing your energy bills to rise.

How much maintenance is required?

Both Colorbond and Zincalume steel require minimal maintenance. They need to be washed every six months, helping to keep your roof clean and free from debris. You need to take more care when cleaning Zincalume than Colorbond, and you might need to be on the roof rather than just hosing it from a distance.

Colorbond roofing maintenance requirements

Colorbond is very easy to maintain, especially if you don’t have much time or don’t want to climb on your roof regularly. They will need to be cleaned every six months, focusing your attention on areas that rainwater does not reach. To clean the roof, you need to use fresh and clean water to hose down the roof, keeping it clean and free from debris.

Zincalume roof maintenance requirements

Zincalume has similar maintenance requirements to Colorbond. You will need to wash the steel every six months to remove any debris or dirt. You should do this with fresh, clean water, but you do need to take extra care when cleaning Zincalume. You must clean in the direction of the grain with a soft cloth or sponge and rinse thoroughly if a mild detergent has been used.

Pressure washers should be avoided to ensure there is no damage to the roof.

Pros & cons for each option

To help you decide which option is right for you, we have outlined the pros and cons of colorbond and Zincalume roofing materials.

Benefits of Colorbond Roofing

  • They are environmentally friendly and made from recyclable materials, making them a fine choice for eco-friendly homes
  • They feature an extended twenty-five-year warranty, so you don’t have to worry about costly repairs or replacements
  • They do need much maintenance, making them ideal for busy homes
  • They help improve the insulation and thermal efficiency of your home, saving you money on your energy bills
  • They can last for seventy years and are durable to corrosion and outdoor exposure

Drawbacks of Colorbond roofing

  • Adding to the roof after it is installed can be tricky, and parts of it may need to be cut away to add solar panels, increasing the installation time and costs
  • Rainwater can be very loud when falling on the roof, which some users find distracting and interrupts their sleep

Benefits of Zincalume roof

  • Zincalume can be more affordable than Colorbond while offering many of the same features
  • Zincalume has a super long lifespan, so you don’t need to worry about replacing your home’s roof once this is down
  • Zincalume is one of the toughest steel products available, making it very durable and weather-resistant
  • Zincalume steel is resistant to corrosion and scratching

Drawbacks of Zincalume roof

  • The shiny metal colour makes Zincalume less energy efficient as it naturally radiates heat
  • The colour of Zincalume cannot be changed, and it can dull over time, impacting the appearance of your home

AMJ completed a roof replacement at our home. This involved removal of our old asbestos roof and replacing with a new colorbond roof, guttering and insulation. They also installed a new roof over our deck using insulated paneling. We were really happy with the end product and the care the AMJ team took in all their work. The team at AMJ kept us informed throughout the planning, the job was completed really quickly and I would recommend them to anyone.

I was getting a Building and Pest inspection done on a house in Annerley I was looking at buying. Because of that storm cell that hit Annerley in 2014 I also had Dennis at A.M.J come out for a second opinion on the "tin" roof. The Building and Pest guys gave the roof the all clear, "No damage, the roof is good". Dennis actually got out the ladder, climbed up the side of the high-set Queenslander and properly inspected the roof. Two minutes, and a half dozen photo's later, he climb's back down to tell me the roof has been severely damaged by hail, and will have to be replaced. Without a proper quote, anywhere up to $30 000. Well, thank you Dennis! That would have been a very expensive mistake you helped me avoid if I had just taken the word of a very reputable, local Building and Pest company. I have contacted that company asking for a full refund! Again, thank you Dennis and A.M.J, very happy to recommend anyone to your company!! Cheers Mark @ Annerley

These guys were very efficient with your paperwork & contract...great to deal with! We had had a number of people look at our (quite flat) roof over the years and your guys spent quite a while on the roof & said they knew what the problem was... The roof got tested with two big downpours - staff ready with buckets & sqeegees - we had no further leaks.3 works to describe AMJ? Efficient, competent, organized. You guys really know what youre doing...very well done!

AMJ was a great company to deal with. In 2011 I had the roof and guttering of my Sunnybank Hills property replaced by AMJ Metal Roofing. The new colour bond roof looked great and the job was completed with no disruption to our family and no rubbish left on site. The cost was very competitive. The roof withstood two severe hailstorms during the subsequent years with no damage or leaks. In 2017 I listed this property for sale and was required to supply a detailed independent building report which included an internal inspection of the roof. It was noted during this inspection that a small number of screws were not fixed properly into one of the batons. I rang AMJ Roofing and within 48 hours a company representative had come to the property, replaced the screws and provided certification for the work. I was very pleased with the service 6 years after the original job.

Could not recommend AMJ Metal roofing more. Their company and staff were amazing to deal with. From the first initial contact to get a quote through to the completion of the roof has been so easy. From Jenna in the office who was easy to get in contact with and replied to emails and call very fast to Nigel who quoted, Matt who checked on the work process and all the tradies just made the entire process of replacing our old roof with a new metal roof so easy. We couldn't be happier with the work that was done. All the tradies were wonderful and polite, they would let us know what was happening each day with the work and the time frame was great from start to finish the work took 4 days.I would recommend AMJ Metal roofing to everyone who needs a new roof or just maintenance. Very, very happy

Thanks for our new roof! From the moment we first contacted AMJ, and right up until the roof was completed, we knew we had made the right decision to employ their services.Nigel provided us with an extremely thorough quote and offered us some helpful advice along the way. Nigel's quote actually involved him climbing onto the roof for a detailed inspection - unlike some quotes we received from others in the industry..Dennis then took the reigns and looked after us extremely well throughout the whole asbestos removal and subsequent roof installation process, and ensured that the finished product was exactly as had been quoted and was completed to a very high standard.Shanelle at their head office was always extremely thorough when assisting us with any queries we had and was always a pleasure to speak with. We are extremely happy with our new Zincalume roof. Not only does our home look fantastic, the internal house temperature during summer was significantly reduced once the new roof and insulation had been installed.Thank you to the team at AMJ for a job well done.Matt & JasMJ Renovations

We have had a very positive experience with AMJ. From the initial consultation with their sales person (Nigel), meeting one of the directors (Alan) to explain in detail their roofing solutions, dealing with their staff (James, Craig and others) through to their helpful administration staff (Shanelle) we have had exceptional service. Their pricing was very competitive and they delivered everything they said they would, on time and kept us well informed. I highly recommend them!Dirk Witteveen - Sheldon

We had to replace our deteriorated Cement Tiled roof and AMJ won the job after researching and comparing quotes from other companies. We are thrilled with the results of our new Colourbond metal roof. Nigel quoted and answered all questions we had, Shanelle was just as helpful from the Office, Dennis and the Team were punctual, friendly, very professional and left our yard tidy. The roof was on in 2 days with zero interruption to familly life. Dennis even saved us future heartache and expense when removing the existing solar hot water tank. It was too dodgy to put back up and he co-ordinated with the Plumber for installation of a new system. I was kept up to date with photos and text messages and phone calls before, during and after the job. We rate AMJ Roofing 10 out of 10 and would highly recommend the Team to anyone requiring a roofing specialist.

Cameron was totally professional and competent. He advised us well. The speed with which the job was finished - a complete roof renewal - was just amazing. The work was done thoroughly, all rubbish was taken away speedily and the Manor red colorbond roof looks just like the advert; I stand and stare in amazement at the beauty of this new roof. I throughly recommend AMJ Metal Roofing.

AMJ Metal Roofing replaced my leaking corrugated roof. Done in a few days with crane and scaffolding. All stages closely scheduled and done in a highly efficient manner. May not be the cheapest but AMJ Metal Roofing is an outstanding company to deal with (and I am not gaining anything by submitting this review). My wife was similarly impressed with the thorough cleanup when the job was finished.

Nobody *wants* a leaking roof. But if you do end up facing that stressful situation, get a quote from AMJ. They weren’t the cheapest but they were the most professional and only ones out of three that really thought through the problem and came up with a clever and workable solution for the shoddy roof design and build at our place. All their staff have been great to work with - always on time, polite, contactable. They made a stressful situation much better for us.I’m hoping not to have any problems with this roof for many years but if I need help with another roof, I’ll be calling AMJ!

If you contract with AMJ Roofing you can be sure of a top quality finish using quality products. They recently replaced my 31yr old leaking tile roof with Colourbond and I could not be happier. The tradies were a lovely happy bunch of guys. I have a whole new house! When it rains I don’t have to go looking for the leaks.Alex was my supervisor and he was wonderful. Kept me informed all the way. In fact, I think the guttering guy let him down, so Alex put on his tool belt and got the job done. You can’t go wrong with AMJ Roofing. Info: I am on the Gold Coast. Our experience with AMJ can be summed up in one word: exceptional! The team demonstrated absolute professionalism while tackling a very complicated re-roofing project on a busy medical building. Despite the challenges of limited access and working above a live, fully operational medical center on a bustling road, AMJ managed the entire project seamlessly. We received constant updates throughout, and the customer service provided by Shanelle was second to none. The finished product is flawless, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend AMJ for any roofing project. We look forward to working with them again!

Terrible experience after dealing with this inept company for six long months. I contacted AMJ Metal Roofing last February to get a quote from their estimator, the very young handsome. Joshua Bain. He is a very presentable young man, who was very professional flying a drone around my property. I accepted his quotation, and that was the start of my problems leading to many unwanted sleepless nights. I was ready to pay the balance of their invoice and in fact, had a bank cheque for the balance in my hand and gave the cheque to the estimator. When there was a fault I withdrew their cheque. In summary I had the Building Inspector at my property on three occasions. The job AMJ did for me was to replace all my guttering and downpipes, and replace my patio. It would be remise of me if I didn't mention Emily. the administration assistant for all her help, as she was very pleasant to deal with both over the phone and in our email conversations. Their, GM, Sarah didn't come into the picture until much later. Sarah made light of the water gushing down from my downpipes. saying it was a "minor" defect. The many problems I encountered with AMJ affected my health, causing me loss of sleep, and my brother, whom I confided in headaches. Initially. when decided on the company I should employ I chose AMJ over Justin from Leakfree Plumbing. What a huge mistake I made. Finally, after the third Building Inspector's report and after six months, he said I could go ahead and pay AMJ, I waited until the recent heavy downpour before I paid AMJ in full last week. I requested a receipt from GM, Sarah and am still waiting. Dealing with AMJ Metal Roofing has been a nightmare for me and regardless of their favourable reviews I recommend you should do yourself a favour and avoid AMJ Metal Roofing like the plague.
